The importance of networking and knowing your point of difference

If there is one thing we have learned post pandemic times is that humans crave and love connection.

After all, what’s better than connecting with like minded people.

And what better method to create human connections that will benefit your business with those in your community than through networking? Due to the time constraints that many business owners face, networking events are often overlooked. However, attending a networking event is a great way to meet like-minded businesses, get your business known in the community, and look for ways to collaborate and add value to other businesses that complement yours. Not only can other businesses learn about you, but you can also learn about other businesses that may complement your product or service, supporting you in promoting the region and ensuring that your visitors have a positive holiday experience.

There are a few key points that you will want to be prepared for your next (or first) networking event. Being prepared will ensure you make the most of the opportunity of promoting your business and your messaging clear about the type of experience you offer.

Networking event elevator pitch

Elevator pitch – your point of difference

Think 30 seconds – someone asks what you do – you have 30 seconds to describe your business.

  • Start with an introduction of yourself and name your business.
  • Describe the problem you are trying to solve
  • Describe your solution. Include keywords here.
  • Describe your target market
  • Share who your team is
  • Finish with your goals/passion for your business and why you do what you do.

You want your pitch to be on point and conversational so that your audience can resonate with or have an emotional connection with your pitch.

When speaking, here are a few handy reminders

  • Speak slowly
  • Make it on point (don’t drag it out!)
  • Be warm and friendly
  • Practice practice practice so it comes naturally
  • Avoid slang or complicated words

Solution: “The great part about working at [your company’s name] is that we help people/businesses with [solution].”

CTA: “If you ever want to meet and explore ways we can work together here are my details”

Action:

Be on the lookout for the next networking event and make sure you register. Call your local Regional Tourism Organisation or Council to say hello and make sure you are in the loop, subscribed to their email database and follow and engage on social media. This is a great time to practice your elevator pitch if they are unfamiliar with your product(s).

If you already have an elevator pitch, now is a good time to review it. Does it still accurately describe your business offerings? Has your target market changed in the last few years? What can you refine?

If you don’t have an elevator pitch, follow the dot points and example template above and start jotting some sentences down. It may take a few goes to get it right.
